The Prayer of the WhalesPrint This Page
by Joan M. Foster
(c) August 1997

Creation:
O, I have traveled the Oceans wide
And marveled at the Creation of the Universe.
From the crown of the snow on the highest mountain peaks
To the cool shadows in the deepest valleys of the Ocean,
From the towering forests blazing forth
In their scarlet coat of Autumn splendor;
To the delicate snowdrops
Heralding the awakening of another Spring.
I have conversed with the majestic Polar Bear,
Guardian of the Arctic;
And the tiniest of fishes
Flashing among the painted shells and the lattices plants
In the depths of the Seas.
I have gloried in the vastness of the Heavens;
The twinkling of the stars and planets
In the velvet softness of the midnight skies;
And in the blaze of the sun
Marking the journey of another day
Across the cloud-tossed skies,
To the carefree cries of the soaring birds.
My voice heralded with joy
The Creation of Mankind;
Appointed guardians of the Earth.

Betrayal:
But as time marched on
Through days and years,
Decades and centuries;
Mankind betrayed the lesser creatures
Of the Earth
Trampling with greedy feet
And selfish hearts
The treasures of Nature before them;
Raping the fertile Earth,
Polluting the crystal waters,
Poisoning the very air was breath
And destroying in ever-increasing numbers
Plants and animals that were once
My loving companions.

Redemption:
Awake citizens of the Land
And once again become
The Caretakers of the Earth,
The Guardians of the Skies,
The Purifiers of the Oceans
And the defenders of helpless creatures.
Listen to the Angels!
Swim with me:
And touch the hand of God.
