Thelon River TripJoin us for twelve days of canoeing on the Thelon River in Canada’s NW Territories and wrap in a chance to view the northern lights and aurora borealis!

The region surrounding the Thelon River is a remote, beautiful and unique portion of the northern tundra. The Thelon River region is North America's largest tract of wilderness, with the closest settled communities in every direction being over 400 km away. The Dene who lived in the area of the Thelon were known as the Ethen-eldili-dene, or the "caribou-eating people."

We have selected the best time of the year to adventure in this wilderness area. Bugs are few, colors are vibrant and the caribou have recently shed their antler velvet, revealing majestic antlers. Brilliant Northern lights may dance through the skies at night. Read on, these are but a few of the Thelon River trip’s attractions!

Additional Thelon River Trip Notes:
Please note there is a $250 / person flight surcharge for 2-person classic canoes.

While following our checklist in the "What to Bring" package,  please note the specific considerations for the tundra rivers. All tundra trips require good quality foul weather gear. Please bring more layers of fleece than you would normally expect to be needed for the fall and include mitts and a wool hat. Rubber boots make excellent footwear - if you are unsure of what to look for you will find good quality rubber boots in a sailing shop. Add a pair of felt insoles and bring along a spare pair.

While mosquitoes should be very diminished by the time of this trip, we do recommend that you bring a bug shirt – just in case.

Please note that no stores are open between the meeting time and our morning departure. Plan to err on the side of extra warm clothing.
